2024 Hyundai Kona revealed: increased size, has a sporty N Line version worth looking forward to

The second generation of Hyundai Kona has just been announced in the Korean market, with many new features in both design and technology.

Hyundai revealed the second generation Kona at the end of 2022 by sharing a few images but hid the details of the car. The new generation has completely changed the design language of the old generation, but the design remains the same. Compared to brands from Japan, Korean cars always update their models faster when Hyundai Kona was first launched in 2017.

Hyundai Kona 2024 has had the wheelbase extended by 60 mm to 2,660 mm. Overall length compared to the first generation has increased by 145 mm, to 4,310 mm. Meanwhile, the vehicle’s width is now 1,825 mm, an increase of 25 mm. When equipped with 17-inch tires, the B-class crossover is 1,580 mm tall (15 mm larger than the previous generation).

These dimensions are for ICE (internal combustion engine) and hybrid models. However, the proportions of the EV version will be almost similar as it will use the same platform.

In its “home country” of Korea, Hyundai plans to sell the new Kona with a 2.0-liter naturally aspirated gasoline engine, generating 147 horsepower and 180 Nm of torque. Power is transmitted to four wheels via a CVT automatic transmission. With the variant using a turbocharged 1.6-liter engine, this engine block produces up to 195 horsepower and 265 Nm along with an eight-speed automatic transmission.

As for the hybrid engine, the 2024 Hyundai Kona uses a 1.6-liter engine that works in conjunction with an electric motor to deliver “impressive acceleration and high efficiency.” Combined power stands at 139 horsepower and maximum torque of 265 Nm, combined with a six-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission.

In terms of practicality, the luggage compartment volume when folding the rear seats is 723 liters. Thanks to moving the gear lever in the center console behind the steering wheel, it has helped create a more spacious cabin space. In addition to more spacious space for the second row of seats, Hyundai also added new technology that allows users to open the luggage compartment door in the most convenient and safe way such as opening speed and maximum opening height.

Some other technologies include wireless charging and NFC technology that helps the user’s smartphone or smartwatch become a digital key. The cabin is quieter than before thanks to additional soundproofing material, double-layer acoustic glass on the windshield, thicker floor mats and sound-absorbing tires for the 19-inch wheels.

Although the second-generation Kona now uses a pair of 12.3-inch screens, many physical buttons are still present on the center console for quick access to commonly used functions. This is still highly appreciated because many current users still do not like having all the features on the infotainment screen.

Hyundai Kona 2024 also adds the N Line version that many users expect, with a sportier design thanks to the front/rear bumpers. At the end of the hood there is an angled spoiler separating the two sides. The 2-tone light/dark rim set has an eye-catching interface. Many details on the front bumper, rear bumper, hood or rearview mirrors are painted black to create a highlight.
