The reason why motorbikes have 2-letter identification plates is similar to 50 cc vehicles

Recently, there have been quite a few vehicles of 50cc or more with identification plates with 2 letters, surprising many people, because previously this license plate was only for vehicles under 50cc.

Before August 15, license plates with 2 letters were usually for vehicles with a capacity of less than 50cc or electric motorbikes with equivalent capacity. However, after the date the identification number plate took effect, cars with a capacity of over 50cc began to appear with 2-letter number plates, causing many people to wonder.

More specifically, in the past, license plates with two letters such as AB, CA, HA… were only issued to motorbikes and motorbikes with an engine capacity of less than 50 cc. Motorcycles and motorbikes with engine capacity from 50 cc to less than 175 cc will be issued license plates with 1 letter and 1 number. With the above license plate levels, users are almost familiar with it.

Therefore, in recent days, many new motorbikes and scooters have 2-digit identification number plates, making many people surprised, curious, and even think that this is a mistake or that the motorbikes brand imitation or even some joke.

However, at present there has been a change in the regulations for issuing license plates. Previously, license plates would be divided into 3 types according to engine capacity, including under 50cc, from 50cc to under 175cc and over 175cc. But from August 15, Clause 5, Article 37 of Circular 24/2023/TT-BCA regulates the color and series of domestic motorcycle license plates as follows: “Motorcycle license plates with white background, letters and black numbers, license plate series use one of the following 20 letters: A, B, C, D, E, F, G, H, K, L, M, N, P, S, T, U, V, X, Y, Z combined with one of the 20 letters A, B, C, D, E, F, G, H, K, L, M, N, P, S, T, U , V, X, Y, Z issued to vehicles of domestic organizations and individuals”.

Therefore, from August 15, 2023 onwards, motorcycle and motorbike license plates issued to vehicles of domestic organizations and individuals will be issued with only 1 type according to new regulations including white background, colored letters and numbers. Black joins the letters together.

Thus, according to the above regulations, license plates for motorbikes and motorbikes issued to vehicles of domestic organizations and individuals from August 15, 2023 have a white background, black letters and numbers, and the letters will be combined. together. This is the reason why, from August 15, 2023, motorbikes over 50cc will appear on the streets with two-letter identification plates.
