A motorbike driver who stops at a red light beyond the line can be sent to jail

Motorbike drivers in Malaysia will face a fine of 2,000 Ringgit, equivalent to more than 10 million VND or 6 months in prison if they let the wheel roll over the white line when stopping at a red light.

Malaysian authorities have announced the implementation of a campaign called “Ops Garisan Putih” nationwide to correct the traffic situation. Notably, the new regulations state that motorbike drivers who stop at the light above the white line can be fined 2,000 Ringgit (about 10.5 million VND) or imprisoned for 6 months.

According to Datuk Mohd Nasri Omar, Deputy Director of Bukit Aman Traffic Enforcement and Investigation Department (JSPT) in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia said: “The regulations state that a driver must not stop the vehicle or any part of the vehicle in a pedestrian crossing unless the previous movement is unintentionally stopped, or a stop is required for avoid collision”.

Malaysian law stipulates that motorcyclists are not allowed to stop part or all of their vehicle in a pedestrian crossing area, except in force majeure cases such as missing a green light due to an unexpected situation ahead or forced to stop on the pedestrian crossing to avoid an accident.

The campaign to tighten traffic safety recently issued by Malaysia includes activities to handle traffic signal violations, illegal use of license plates, traffic obstruction and illegal parking.

In addition, the Malaysian Ministry of Transport plans to install surveillance cameras integrated with artificial intelligence to detect cases of car drivers using mobile phones while waiting at red lights.
