More than 50 million airbags from many car manufacturers in the US are at risk of recall, with 7 users injured

12 car manufacturers in the US are said to be using airbags manufactured by ARC and Delphi that are not safe, can cause injury to users, and may also have to be recalled for replacement.

The US National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has just announced that about 52 million airbags equipped on cars from 12 car manufacturers in the US pose a risk of injury. users due to airbag-related problems. All of these airbags were manufactured by ARC and Delphi from 2000 – 2018.

NHTSA’s investigation results showed that 7 car users in the US were injured, including one death due to errors related to ARC airbags. Previously, in April 2023, the agency sent a letter to the ARC supplier requesting a recall, but the company refused. There will be a public meeting between relevant parties to make a final decision on this recall.

Automobile manufacturers allowed to use defective airbags manufactured by ARC and Delphi include BMW, Ford, Fiat Chrysler Automobiles, General Motors, Hyundai, Kia, Maserati, Mercedes-Benz, Porsche, Tesla, Toyota and Volkswagen.

NHTSA said the error occurs when the bag is inflated, the friction process that connects the inflator’s upper and lower pressure tanks can create a pipe blockage in the event of an air bag deployment. That caused the inflator to rupture, sending debris and metal shards into the car’s passengers.

ARC has also protested the recall of airbags that it (as well as Delphi) manufactures and supplies to automakers. In response to NHTSA’s allegations, at least four automakers have launched recalls related to this issue for inspection. General Motors (GM) is one of them. Since May 2023, GM has recalled and repaired nearly 1 million cars, after an accident in March 2023 left the driver with facial injuries.

A public hearing will be held on October 5 to clarify this issue. ARC and related parties will have the opportunity to present and explain issues related to its airbags in response to NHTSA’s accusations. NHTSA will then decide whether to require the manufacturer to submit a safety defect notice.
