There are fewer and fewer manual cars in popular cars in Vietnam, which is also a general trend in the world

In the opinion of many people, the majority of people believe that when using a car in urban areas, most people will choose to buy an automatic transmission car. Rush hour traffic congestion is also more leisurely than a manual transmission vehicle.

According to data published by JATO Dynamics – a unit specializing in researching the world auto market, the proportion of newly registered cars equipped with manual transmissions in Western countries has been on a sharp decline in recent years.

In some European countries such as Italy, France, Spain, Greece, Hungary, Ireland and Portugal, the proportion of manual transmission cars is 32%, as recorded in the first half of this year. This rate reached 89% in 2000, decreased to 78% in 2017 and plummeted to 34% in 2022.

JATO Dynamics believes that there are many reasons why manual transmission cars are losing popularity. In addition to the price difference between manual and automatic cars that is increasingly narrowing, traffic congestion in many cities around the world is also a factor pushing users to switch to automatic cars.

In the small car segment in the Vietnamese market, the number of cars with manual transmission options accounts for more. For example, the A-class car segment has Hyundai Grand i10, KIA Morning and Sonet.

Class B is mainly sedans, including Toyota Vios, KIA Soluto, Mitsubishi Attrage and Hyundai Accent. These car models are also the models chosen as service cars.

It can be seen that from the D-segment upwards, there are no longer any car models equipped with manual transmissions, except the Toyota Fortuner. The C-segment segment is also very rare, with only KIA K3, Hyundai Elantra and the newly launched New MG5 MT.

In addition, some 7-seat MPV models currently on sale in Vietnam also have manual transmission options: Mitsubishi Xpander, Suzuki Ertiga Hybrid, Toyota Avanza Premio and Toyota Innova.
