Many car models sell well in the Southeast Asian market but are “slow” in Vietnam. Guess which car you know?

Focus2move announces the best-selling car models in Southeast Asia after the first 3 quarters of 2023. Indonesia, Malaysia, and Thailand are the highest car consumption markets in the region.

According to focus2move, Top 10 best-selling cars in the Southeast Asian market in the first 3 quarters of 2023 include: Toyota Hilux, Isuzu D-Max, Perodua Myvi, Honda City, Honda HR-V, Mitsubishi Xpander, Ford Ranger, Toyota Vios, Toyota Avanza and Perodua Bezza. However, many car models on this list are not popular in the Vietnamese market.

Toyota Hilux – 154,100 vehicles

Not really attracting customers in Vietnam, but Toyota Hilux is still the best-selling car model in the Southeast Asian market. After the first 9 months of 2023, this pickup truck model achieved sales of 154,100 vehicles, although still 6.5% lower than the same period last year.

The Toyota Hilux pickup model is always ranked behind competitors in the same segment in the Vietnamese market with only a few dozen units sold each month, far from the leading model, the Ford Ranger, with sales of more than 1,000 units/month.

Isuzu D-Max – 126,192 vehicles

Isuzu D-Max sells little in the Vietnamese market, but in the first 9 months of 2023, this pickup truck model achieved sales of up to 126,192 vehicles in markets in Southeast Asia. The Isuzu D-Max pickup model is also in the group with very “bad” sales in Vietnam, selling only a dozen units, or even a few, each month.

Honda City – 86,281 vehicles

Only ranked 3rd in the B-class sedan segment in Vietnam, but in the Southeast Asian market as a whole, Honda City is the most popular sedan model with 81,668 cars sold after the first 9 months of 2023, down 5.9% compared to same period last year.

Honda HR-V – 73,547 vehicles

Along with City, Honda HR-V also appears on this list. The appearance of a new generation has helped the Honda HR-V increase its appeal to customers, thereby achieving sales of 73,547 vehicles, an increase of 17.8% over the same period last year.

In the Vietnamese market, the Honda HR-V model has a slow consumption because the price is quite high – about 800 million VND/unit. Meanwhile, with this price range, customers have many other options in the same segment.

Mitsubishi Xpander – 71,959 vehicles

Mitsubishi Xpander is currently the best-selling car model in Vietnam, the entire Southeast Asian market is only ranked 6th with 71,959 cars sold, of which Indonesia and Vietnam account for the highest percentage. Compared to the same period last year, Mitsubishi Xpander sales increased by 3.2%.

Ford Ranger – 64,187 vehicles

With 1,347 vehicles delivered to customers in September 2023, an increase of 21% compared to August (reaching 1,113 vehicles), Ford Ranger continues to capture the majority of the segment’s market share. Ford Ranger’s sales are even more than the total sales of all competitors combined.

Cumulatively in the first 9 months of the year, the number of Ford Ranger vehicles delivered to customers reached 11,235 vehicles, 7 times higher than the total sales of “runner-up” Mitsubishi Triton. Ranger is also the only car model in the segment to be honored at 5th place in the Top 10 best-selling cars in September. In the Southeast Asian market, this pickup truck is behind Toyota Hilux and Isuzu D- Max with 64,187 cars sold in the first 9 months of 2023.

Toyota Vios – 62,929 vehicles

Not only in Vietnam, Toyota Vios is losing its appeal and position in the region. There were only 62,929 cars sold in Southeast Asia in the first 9 months of 2023, down 7.3% over the same period last year.

Toyota Avanza – 58,574 vehicles

Despite the increasingly competitive MPV segment and the appearance of its “brother” Veloz, Toyota Avanza still maintains its appeal with 58,574 vehicles, only an increase of about 0.5% over the same period last year. The Avanza car model was once criticized by Vietnamese people due to its inappropriate design and small size.

The company has temporarily discontinued business and improved this model to be more eye-catching and larger in size, but sales are still not as expected, with monthly sales of about 200 – 300 units.
